ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

RBUILDING POWER

Rooted in Rights

Grounded in Responsibility

Led by Community

Culturally Rooted Reformations is a reparative justice organization advancing human rights, community-led repair, and systemic redress. We work alongside communities whose lives and places have been shaped by systemic injustice to strengthen their ability to understand conditions, shape decisions, and pursue change.

Through organizing, political education, research, and advocacy, we build community power and advance reparative justice practice and strategy.

Making the Promise of Human Rights Real

We believe human rights are best fulfilled through strategic, community-led, and locally designed implementation. Our approach is relational, grounded in our responsibilities to one another, to place, and to future generations. For CRR, reparative justice connects these commitments to action. People who experience harm should have the power to shape what repair requires and what comes next. Reparative justice must be a liberatory process, one that strengthens agency, shifts power, and expands self-determination.

About CRR

We believe human rights are best fulfilled through strategic, community-led, and locally designed implementation. Our approach is relational, grounded in our responsibilities to one another, to place, and to future generations. For CRR, reparative justice connects these commitments to action. People who experience harm should have the power to shape what repair requires and what comes next. Reparative justice must be a liberatory process, one that strengthens agency, shifts power, and expands self-determination.

Why Culturally Rooted?

Culture carries memory and knowledge that can help people understand the present and shape what comes next. For CRR, knowledge is a catalyst. Those closest to an issue hold essential insight into what has happened, what should be protected, and what meaningful change can look like. Repair should therefore be grounded in the histories, relationships, and aspirations of the people and places involved.

Our Vision

We envision people with the agency and resources to determine their futures and human rights made real through shared responsibility, self-determination, and meaningful redress.
Our Approach

Rooted in Rights. Grounded in Responsibility. Led by Community.

We work from a relational understanding of justice. Our lives are shaped through relationships with one another, with place, and with the institutions that exercise power.Harm moves through these relationships and can continue across generations. Understanding these connections helps identify what happened, why it continues, and where responsibility belongs.

Power carries responsibility.

Our work begins with the knowledge of people who live with these conditions. We bring lived experience and cultural memory into conversation with research, history, and policy to create a stronger foundation for action.

01

Reparative Justice as a Liberatory Process

People who experience harm should have meaningful influence over how harm is understood, what repair requires, and how reparative responses are carried out.A liberatory approach recognizes people as knowledge holders and decision-makers, rather than recipients of remedies designed elsewhere. For CRR, repair should strengthen agency and shift power. It should increase people’s ability to influence existing institutions and support them in creating their own when necessary. This principle also guides our work with policymakers and institutions. Questions of law, financing, feasibility, and implementation cannot be separated from participation and power.

02

Repairing Conditions, Creating Possibility

Some injustices reshape land, livelihood, culture, institutions, and opportunity. Repair must therefore address both immediate harm and the conditions that reproduce it.It also asks what should be restored, what needs to change, and what people want to create. For CRR, reparative justice connects accountability with self-determination, collective well-being, and different possibilities for the future.

Our Work

CRR works alongside communities whose lives and places have been shaped by systemic injustice. We bring community knowledge into relationship with organizing, political education, research, and advocacy to deepen understanding and strengthen collective power.

Building Knowledge and Collective Power

Organizing begins with relationships and locally defined priorities.Political education and community-rooted research connect lived experience with history and data. We approach data as a liberating tool that people can interpret and use to strengthen collective action.

Advancing Reparative Justice

We work with people who have experienced harm to articulate their needs, identify meaningful forms of repair, and shape reparative responses.CRR also advises policymakers and institutions on reparations and other approaches to redress, including questions of participation, policy, financing, feasibility, and implementation.

Our work recognizes that injustice can leave lasting effects on people, places, resources, and institutions. Meaningful redress may therefore require changing the conditions that continue to reproduce harm. We connect accountability with possibility: addressing what has happened while strengthening people's ability to determine what comes next.

Research & Resources

Tools for Understanding. Resources for Action.

CRR develops research, frameworks, and learning resources that help people investigate injustice and turn what they learn into action. Our materials connect lived experience with history, data, and analysis to identify harm, responsibility, and possibilities for change.

Repairing What Has Been Harmed. Creating What Comes Next.

Our repair framework explores how people can understand harm, define meaningful remedy, and shape what comes next. It expands reparative inquiry to include environmental harm, economic and social marginalization, and other forms of systemic injustice.

Explore CRR Resources

Our research examines the histories and structures behind the issues we work on. Political education supports collective learning, while community research tools help people gather and interpret evidence within their own contexts.

Together, these resources put knowledge in service of action.

Let’s Build Together

CRR works with communities, advocates, organizations, policymakers, and institutions pursuing locally rooted approaches to justice, repair, and systemic redress.

Work With CRR

We collaborate on community-rooted research, political education, advocacy, and reparative strategy. CRR supports people who have experienced harm in defining meaningful approaches to repair. We also advise policymakers and institutions on reparations programs and broader redress strategies while keeping affected people at the center. We offer workshops, research and strategic support, facilitation, and speaking engagements related to reparative justice, human rights, environmental justice, and CRR's broader work.
